Self-assessment

Player self-assessment based on Pickleball Canada skill guidelines, from 2.0 to 4.0 and above.

Player self-assessment

Self-assessment of pickleball skills, based on Pickleball Canada guidelines, allows each player to determine their skill level (2.0 to 4.0 and above) based on their technical skills, mobility, and understanding of the game.

Essential for Open Play

This assessment is essential to our Open Play format, as it helps us group players into time slots that correspond to their skill level, ensuring more balanced, enjoyable, and safe matches for everyone.

Take a few minutes

Before registering, take a few minutes to review the self-assessment guide and identify your skill level. This will ensure a better playing experience and promote enjoyment and progress for every participant.

If you are unsure

Choose the lower group and move up with confidence. Balanced groups make Open Play safer, more enjoyable, and more useful for everyone.

Level 2.0 – Beginner

You are new to pickleball and are learning the basics of the game. You understand the main rules, but your footwork and shots are not yet consistent. You are able to exchange a few shots at a moderate pace, without aiming for specific zones. The goal: develop consistency and learn to serve and return reliably.

Level 2.5 – Intermediate beginner

You have a better command of the basic strokes and you often manage to keep the ball in play. You understand the difference between playing from the baseline and at the net, and you are starting to use the dink. You move with more balance, but still lack precision and control under pressure. The goal: strengthen consistency and improve court positioning.

Level 3.0 – Intermediate

You are able to play longer rallies and control your pace. You execute serves, returns, and volleys consistently, and you apply simple strategies in doubles. You understand when to move up to the net and how to position yourself to defend or attack. The goal: improve shot variety (lob, drive, drop shot) and communication with your partner.

Level 3.5 – Advanced intermediate

You demonstrate a good strategic understanding of the game. You vary your shots to create openings, you often succeed with your third shot drops, and you know how to slow down the game when necessary. You move efficiently, anticipate trajectories, and make few unforced errors. The goal: refine consistency, game reading, and reaction speed.

Level 4.0 – Advanced

You have mastered all pickleball shots and play with intention. You use spin, depth, and accuracy to dominate rallies. Your communication in doubles is solid, and you adjust your strategy based on your opponent. The goal: maintain a high level of performance and refine tactical details.
